"Crossed Words" Game

[Seminary-Notes] ==================================== FOR YOUR INFORMATION... ==================================== Spring is a good time to introduce new scripture mastery activities and games. CROSSED WORDS is an interesting and unique game -- each time you play is different. I think your students will enjoy playing CROSSED WORDS. (It can also help them better learn the scripture mastery scriptures, scripture mastery references and keywords.) CROSSED WORDS is a flexible and adaptable game that is similar to a crossword puzzle that is built "on the fly" during the actual game. (Additional pictures from an sample game are found below.) Here are the instructions for this game: Here are a few additional things to note… The player making the first move may place their game strip anywhere on the game board that it will fit. No game strip may extend outside of the game board. Some keywords are extremely long and have been divided into two separate keyword game strips (such as “Priesthood Power, Called and Chosen” which has been separated into two game strips – “Priesthood Power” and “Called and Chosen”). Players may place game strips on the game board in any order desired. (Scripture mastery keyword and scripture reference game strip pairs do not have to be placed on the game board at the same time.) Games may be played until players have run out of legal moves or until a specified game time has expired. There are numerous ways to use the games strips. For example, games can be played with all game strips, only keywords, only references, only game strips from one Seminary year, only specified scriptures (perhaps scriptures 6-15), etc. The picture below shows the first eight steps in a sample game. Game strips could be played in this order, for example: (1) Service, (2) Other Sheep, (3) Moses 1:39, (4) Apostasy, (5) Faith, (6) John 10:16, (7) D&C 10:5, and (8) 1 Nephi 3:7, etc. (To save you lesson preparation time, please note that a complete set of CROSSED WORDS game materials -- a blank game board, scripture reference game strips for all 100 scripture mastery scriptures, scripture keyword game strips for all 100 scripture mastery scriptures, and instructions -- are available in the "All Seminary" Scripture Mastery Resources packet.)
