The Importance of April 6th
April 6th is a most important day in church history...
* April 6th -- is recognized as the birthday of our Savior
* April 6, 1789 -- "...the Constitution of the United States went
into operation as the basic law of the United States when the
electoral college unanimously elected George Washington as the
first president of the nation. This date, I believe, was not
accidental." (President Ezra Taft Benson, Ensign, May 1976, p. 91)
* April 6, 1830 -- The church was organized at Fayette, New York
-- Joseph Smith received D&C 21
* April 6, 1833 -- General conference was held at the ferry on the
Big Blue River in Jackson County, Missouri
* April 6, 1843 -- The name of the patriarch to the Church was first
presented for sustaining with the other General
Authorities at general conference
* April 6, 1845 -- The Quorum of the Twelve issued a Proclamation
* April 6, 1847 -- Newell K. Whitney was sustained as the presiding bishop
at general conference (the first time that a presiding bishop
was sustained with the other General Authorities)
* April 6, 1848 -- Annual Conference of the Church at Kanesville
sustained Brigham Young as President of the church
* April 6, 1852 -- An adobe tabernacle was dedicated on Temple Square
* April 6, 1853 -- The four cornerstones of the Salt Lake Temple were laid
* April 6, 1877 -- The St. George Temple was dedicated
* April 6, 1880 -- A special jubilee year celebration was held
* April 6, 1892 -- The capstone of the Salt Lake Temple was set in place
* April 6, 1893 -- The Salt Lake Temple was dedicated
* April 6, 1896 -- The First Presidency and Apostles released a "Political
Manifesto"
* April 6, 1904 -- Official Statement on Plural Marriages released
by the First Presidency
* April 6, 1930 -- The church's centennial was celebrated
* April 6, 1931 -- The first edition of the Church News was published
* April 6, 1941 -- Assistants to the Twelve first called
* April 6, 1942 -- The Tabernacle was closed for the duration of WWII
* April 6, 1959 -- Pres. McKay announced his "Every member a missionary" challenge
* April 6, 1980 -- The church's sesquicentennial was celebrated
-- The First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve issued a proclamation
* April 6, 1986 -- Solemn assembly held to sustain Ezra Taft Benson as prophet
* April 6, 1993 -- The centennial of the Salt Lake Temple was observed
* April 6, 1996 -- Pres. Hinckley announced that the Conference Center would be built
* April 6, 2000 -- The Palmyra Temple was dedicated
