[Seminary-Notes] ==================================== FOR YOUR INFORMATION... ====================================
Seminary is a wonderful blessing in the lives of our students, but it is also a great blessing in our lives, too!
Seminary provides additional incentive for teachers, as well as students, to memorize scriptures.
I noted one of the benefits of scripture memorization in a recent email interview with the evangelist Billy Graham that was published in The Washington Post (April 14, 2007, p. B9).
Rev. Graham is now 88-years-old and in declining health. He was asked by the Post reporter: "What gives you comfort and hope? What is your daily faith practice?"
Here is part of his response: "Now that reading has become more difficult, I probably read the Bible less but pray more. Of course, over the years I've memorized many passages from the Bible, and I'm especially thankful now that I did this. I wish we gave more attention to Bible memorization in our churches."
I'm grateful that our church leadership stresses the importance of scripture reading and memorization as an integral part of the Seminary program.
But the benefits of scripture memorization do not have to stop with just Seminary students and teachers...
In a recent sacrament meeting in our ward, our bishop spoke about how hard he has been working to memorize all of the Doctrine & Covenants scripture mastery scriptures before the current Seminary year ends. It sent a great message to the Seminary teachers, students, and families in our ward.
